The Painterly Figure
Loosen up your figurative work using the painterly approach! Paint in the very place where the impressionist masters of the early 20th Century once made their summer pilgrimages to Miss Florence Griswold’s boarding house, and the Lyme Art Colony was formed. Working from observation of a clothed model outdoors, you’ll learn to simplify the complex forms of the figure and surrounding landscape into clear shapes, values, and edges. Then organize these shapes into strong design and color combinations using loose, expressive marks to interpret the subject for that lush painterly look.
At the start of the day, Alain will demonstrate a painterly approach to the figure en plein air from start to finish. Then students will have an opportunity to paint their own figure study on location, with instruction and encouragement from Alain provided throught the day. Known as the home of American impressionism, the Florence Griswold Museum provides a bounty of inspiration from beautiful floral gardens to views of the Lieutenant River, not to mention the historic museum collection of paintings. We will conclude our day together with a guided tour of the Florence Griswold Museum at 4pm.
